APi Communications Make an Exhibition of Themselves!

CRE Westpoint ExeterAPi Communications recently exhibited at the Christian Resources Exhibition at Westpoint, near Exeter.  The 2 day event, considered to be the ‘Ideal Church Show’ comprised of stands, seminars and events and attracted visitors from the whole of the south west and further afield.

The exhibition enabled APi Communications to showcase a variety of audio visual equipment, which are frequently use in installations. Some of our engineers were on hand to provide advice and discuss audio visual installations with visitors to the show.  We also had on display images of recent installations and of particular interest was a video showing a retractable screen, which APi Communications recently installed at Emmanuel Church, Plymouth.

The event proved worthwhile and it was a pleasure to meet some of our previous customers, as well as customers of the future.

Emmanuel Church - Plymouth Projection Screen Installation

Emmanuel - PlymouthEmmanuel Church of England church, in Mannamead, Plymouth, is a forward looking centre of worship within its community. For some years they have been using temporary projection screens to assist the congregation and when it was decided to make these into a permanent feature APi Communications were invited to submit a quotation as some strict criteria were being applied in this large mid-Victorian church.

The central nave of the church, which supports the roof,  is spanned by stone arches reaching 10 metres across. It was a requirement that a rear-projection electric screen be supported beneath a central arch over the chancel, a short distance in front of the high altar, as a projector was already installed here.  The screen needed to be concealed when not in use, so an electric winch was also installed, above the arch apex, which allows the screen casing to be lifted out of sight of the congregation.

The church is constructed with twin aisles running parallel to the nave and the many supporting pillars impaired the viewing angles of this chancel screen. So electric screens were installed at the front prospect of each aisle, with a roof mounted projector sited to suit. These screens were fitted to boom arms which hinged from the side walls, thus allowing the booms to be swung aside allowing an un-interrupted view of the church when not in use.

The installation required careful planning by APi Communications staff and we were pleased with the results and the complimentary remarks received. This is just one of many projects where we have provided a bespoke service and ensured that the installation is aesthetically pleasing within its surroundings.

APi Communications Create Winter Street Scene at Torquay Tourist Attraction

bygones christmas sceneBygones of Babbacombe are a leading Torquay tourist attraction and for their winter season they chose APi Communications to assist with their creation of "Christmas in a Victorian street" scene. Amongst the authentic looking shops a christmas tree was erected onto which a snow machine propelled a blizzard, whilst carol singers could be heard singing a selection of festive favourites. Further background sound fills were used to create an ambience Charles Dickens would surely recognise!

How we do it!

For this event there are many and varied audio effects and trails. As reliability is paramount these are encoded onto solid-state memory cards and thus no mechanical devices are required. The sounds are sourced, or recorded by APi, and the programmes written with specific timing breaks to ensure a life-like sequence is created for the audience. We then worked with our client to introduce new ideas that occured from the experience of these effects.

Bell P.A. Back In Business

Torquay's St John the Evangelist Church had discontinued it's bell broadcast system as the area residents had complained of the poor quality sound it reproduced. So whilst attending to the church hearing loop system, we assessed the performance of the bell public address and suggested how it could be improved. Our recommendations were approved and so we assembled a frame within the tower and about 20 feet above the old bell, onto which we mounted three public address loudspeakers. These are configured so as to project the sound through decorative features above the original bell louvres and so project the sound out over both Torquay town and the harbour. We chose to use only three drive units as the residents live close to one side of the tower and so this side is muted. The reproduction is now clear and bright, giving a most realistic impression that there is a full carillon within the tower (though it is in fact a cd and any style of ring may be chosen!).

Touch Screen Technology in Bristol's Oldest Building

St James priory Kiosk BristolAPi communications worked with Museum interpretation experts 'Imagemakers' to provide a touch screen information kiosk for visitors looking to explore the long history, and current day use, of St. James Priory. This must surely be one of the most historic religious buildings hidden away in the commercial centre of Bristol.

Our PC based system has a closed version of the priory website running on it, and the multi touch screen allows navigation without the clutter of mouse and keyboard and thus achieves that pre-requisite of any public utility, a "user-friendly" interface.

An audio system allows for playback of embedded video clips which bring both the building and the surrounding city to life.
